I have just changed to a different lap top and was unable to get the projector and laptop to 'talk to each other'. No matter how many times I did what I had done in the past I had no luck and learners were about to arrive! Fortunately Terry Aldred (hope I have your surname spelt correctly Terry - apologies if not) arrived to offer IAG to my learners. Within seconds the problem was sorted. The Fn key (bottom left of the computer) and the F3 key (along top row of keys) were pressed and 'hey presto'. This just demonstrates how learning on one's own guarantees big gaps in fundamental knowledge. For some reason the old laptop and projector connected without this simple operation. I am sharing this in case there is someone else out there that did not have this crucial knowledge and also to flag up the need for continuing opportinities to join training courses for using the IT equipment. How about a monthly surgery - where we can come with unsolved problems and/or learn how to use another piece of equipment?

Sara, thank you for sharing this bit of experience which is valuable in the reassurance that it's not "only me".
Using another computer is like driving someone else's car don't you think? All the same things are there but in slightly different places!
I think one of the main benefits of this blog is that we can share so much here - do you think that enough tutors would come to a monthly "surgery" to make it viable?
Thank you for that information Sara. At the beginning of this term I was also unable to get the laptop, docucam and projector to speak to each other, I had no Terry to help, you can imagine how frustrated I felt 10 minutes before learners arrived, I didn't deliver what I'd planned and haven't made the time to try again. With this information I shall try again at the beginning of the term.
I myself would be unlikely to make use of a surgery due to lack of time. I'm speaking for myself here, I imagine other tutors might find it helpful.
I would find it very useful to have basic instructions on either a laminated sheet or as a document on our laptops.
Thanks Sara for sharing that. I think an "on line surgery" via the blog is probably the best idea. If we are unable to resolve the problem from there then I am always happy to have tutors bring equipment in or to visit them to resolve. We are also working on guides to "what's in the box" and some brief instructions. Lizzie your idea of laminating them is a good one which I'll take on board.
I tried to edit my comment because I spotted a 'typo' - ended up deleting - is it possible to edit a comment after it has been posted?
Just was going to say - laminated sheets would be very useful. I use the docucam laminated sheet (provided with the docucam). It is very useful when one's head is full of learners' individual needs. It is reassuring to have this memory jog.
It is also reassuring to know we can have face to face support when needed. I suppose this was really what I had in mind with the 'surgery' idea.
