Community textiles diary

I am enjoying creating the diary of making our Community Textile in Littledean. I think some of the sets of pictures and the comments would make a meaningful handout for learners. The learners will be in the pictures so it will be a great reminder of the learning experience. The group is keen to do this. For example my week 3 set includes how to use freezer paper. I can't work out how to copy the pictures and the captions 'in the set' so that I could print out a copy. Not many of my learners are using the internet yet. However the use of IT in the session is arousing their interest in the possiblities and there is talk of developing an internet cafe in Littledean. I thought if I could produce prints of some of the flickr' pics and captions it would be a great step in the right direction. Learners with the internet have had a handout to explain how to get to flickr. I don't want the other learners to loose out.

hmmm...a challenge, Sara. I guess the trouble is that printing out lots of photos is expensive. Can those without access to the internet get to see the Flickr site before/after the workshop, perhaps?
Or how about at their local library?

I love what you're doing btw.

I hope the Mobile Broadband will enable yet more learners to see the pictures and comments on line. I would certainly be interested in using some - eg freezing paper - to create guides on the VLE. How would you feel about this. They would eventually be open to Ad Ed learners who were taking a coures in which they were relevant.

Do you think it would long for you to cut and paste the pictures and comments into a Word document to produce the handout? Does anyone have a better solution?

I have some very useful software on my computer - Coraldraw - which enables me to cut and paste photos, change the size of them, add text, and so on. I've had it for a few years now and so I'm used to it and it doesn't take long to use. Is there similar software on the AdEd laptops?

Jane, I'd love to be able to use the Mobile Broadband to show my learners their work online, if you have any going!

Currently we don't have Coraldraw or anything similar on the laptops. However, I think we can download a limited version of Photoshop for free. Does anyone know if this would be useful - have never used it myself.

Only have one Mobile Broadband dongle currently - although would like to put forward a case for more if they are enhancing sessions so perhaps Sara could comment on how it has worked in her sessions. Perhaps you could borrow the one Sara has?

As usual, I think the challenge is the cost - these full-scale graphics programs are expensive and though lovely to have (Lucky Lizzie!) are probably out of our reach bearing in mind the few who would be knowledgeable enough to use them.

There is a good alternative in the online version of Photoshop Elements, mentioned in an earlier post on this blog and other, similar software which comes bundled with new computers, scanners, cameras and so on.

wow - what a lot of great suggestions - will investigate them asp. Jane you are welcome to use any of the pics and descriptions, but if it is for VLE I would want to make sure the wording is 'spot on' - writing in a bit of a rush at the moment to keep up with everything - but would have time over the summer to fine tune the technique instructions. Good to read that it could be helpful.
