Gap- filling exercise

Hi everyone

I've decided to show you-at last- how the projector changed my professional life:)

I used to do gap- filling exercises with the learners, but they were ordinary worksheets. Because my students do nightshifts and come to the sessions half asleep, I tried something else, just to wake them up. I prepared gapped sentences (the topic was 'My day'), and printed out the words to be put in the gaps. Then, I displayed the exercise on the wall, using the projector, of course. The learners got a set of words each, and they stuck them on the wall with some Blue Tack. It worked really well, we all had fun and it helped the visual learners remember the sentence structure better.

Ah, Aleksandra, what inspired use of the projector! At some point, perhaps we might introduce you to the Mimio Interactive Whiteboard (when you are feeling strong!) which may be a more tekky version of doing this...but in the meantime, I admire your resourcefulness!

I wonder if you've come across the program Hot Potatoes? Let me know if you haven't (or google it)

Gill, thanks for your kind words:)I don't think someone has ever ADMIRED anything I did:)
As for the whiteboard, I don't know if it's the same thing, but I think I had a chance to use it as a learner, at a CFET course. It was a board connected to the computer, with a fancy 'eraser' and pens. Everyone loved it.
I have no idea what Hot Potatoes is, I'll check it right now.

I've just checked it and it does sound splendid! However, do you know if I'd have to pay the licence? As their conditions from the website aren't very clear for me.

In its basic form, it's free. The more comprehensive version is paid-for and I think AdEd had a license...though who knows about that it hard to say. I will make enquiries and let you know. In the meantime, it might be worth asking the provider you're working for right now - GlosCol? Maybe they have a license themselves.

Having read the conditions again myself, I wonder if you need a licence at all (sorry about the spelling of my last message btw) Maybe Jane Carter-Dunn is reading this and can advise us further.

Re the Mimio, its a portable version of the whiteboard you used before, so you would perhaps find it easier to use than the rest of us! Once again I'm sure Jane CD can sort that out for you.

Hi Aleksandra
Really enjoyed seeing what you are doing with your new equipment. I am currently arraning some mimio training for end of May/early so will let you know when it is organised.

Hot Potatoes is free to education providers and relatively simple to use. There are some good training materials available on line at: http://www.sdelc.org.uk/MOD-07-Content-SourceAndCreate/Sub1/HotPotatoes.aspx

I got in touch with Hot Potatoes team, here's what they said about the licence:
"You need to purchase a licence under any of the following conditions:
You are not working for a state-funded educational institution.
You are in business for yourself.
You charge money for access to the material you make with Hot
Potatoes.
You do not make the material freely available through the WWW.
I don't really know the nature of your employment, so I can't say
whether you work for yourself or not. The other key factor in your case would be the last one; to use HotPot for free, you'd need to make sure that all the exercises you create are freely available on a public Website with no password protection."
Moreover, I started to make a quiz using HP and it stops working after the 3rd question, even though I did register!
I used the good, old Power Point instead:)
